Hi 409,
Thanks to Sharon's and Jing Yi's conspiring, I am planning a 409-cum-Advanced Literature gathering on 1st June, tentatively 4pm-8pm at my house
(those who stay are the boarding school can probably leave earlier :), so keep that time period free.
E-mail me if you have any suggestions on what you want to have for that day (we can do stuff like play badminton and watch movies (depending on whether everyone can fit into the living room) but it's a semi-d and I don't have a swimming pool and all that. Just considerable space and a park nearby :) )

More details will be given later :)

Those That Matter Don't Mind

I received the following e-mail and thought it was really creative and cute. The message I got from it was that sometimes no matter what someone does, no matter what the circumstances are, there is a light at the end of every tunnel. It reminded me of one of my favorite quotes:

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind."

Don't judge people on the mistakes they have made or will make. Honor them for the choices and efforts they put forth to make things better. Respect people who help you, or help others, even though they're not in the best situation themselves. Remember: everyone is going through something.

Here's the e-mail:

An old Italian man lived alone in New Jersey. He wanted to plant his
annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work, as the ground was
hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison.

The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't be able to plant my
tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a
garden plot. I know if you were here, my troubles would be over. I know
you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days.

Love,
Papa

A few days later he received a letter from his son.

Dear Pop,

Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are buried.
Love,
Vinnie

At 4am the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the
entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and
left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Pop,

Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the
circumstances.
Love you,
Vinnie

The Starfish Story...

by Loren Eiseley (1907 - 1977)

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a little boy, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?" The little boy paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean." "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the little boy replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die." Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

Discouraged he began to walk away. Suddenly the little boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one." The man looked at the little boy inquisitively and thought about what he had said and had done. Inspired, he joined the little boy in throwing the starfish back into the ocean.

dear four nine. this is wat the teachers have been trying all year long. they've been trying to change us in better people, trying to redeem us and help us get on track. maybe it's time we learnt to appreciate their efforts and lets be starfishes that shine brightly after being saved. let us NOT be starfishes who after being saved, crawl back onto shore, just to dry and shrivel. i hope u all understand.

lotsa love,
me
